Celebrating Language, Culture and Identity During Mother Tongue Week 2026
At HFSE International School, language is more than a means of communication. It is a bridge that connects people to their heritage, culture, and identity. During Mother Tongue Week, our students embarked on a meaningful journey of discovery as they explored the richness of their respective languages through engaging and interactive classroom activities.
Furthermore, Mother Tongue Week brought together learners from our Mandarin Global Class and Filipino Standard Class. Through this celebration, students looked beyond vocabulary and grammar to understand the deeper significance of language in preserving traditions, strengthening communities, and expressing identity.
Discovering the Value of Mother Tongue Languages
Mother tongue languages play an important role in helping children connect with their cultural roots. They carry histories, traditions, values, and stories that pass from one generation to the next.
Throughout Mother Tongue Week, students explored how language influences daily life and shapes the way people communicate, celebrate traditions, and express themselves. In addition, discussions, activities, and collaborative learning experiences helped learners gain a deeper appreciation of the cultural importance of their respective languages.
As a result, students realised that language is not simply something they study. Instead, it is something they experience and use every day.
Bringing Mandarin and Filipino to Life
Students from the Mandarin Global Class and Filipino Standard Class participated in a variety of hands-on activities designed to make language learning meaningful and enjoyable.
Through interactive classroom experiences, learners engage with their languages in creative and practical ways. Moreover, these activities encouraged active participation while helping students strengthen both communication skills and cultural understanding.
Rather than simply memorising words and grammar structures, students discovered how language reflects traditions, customs, and shared experiences within communities.
Understanding Culture Through Language
One of the key lessons during Mother Tongue Week was the strong connection between language and culture.
Every language carries unique expressions, stories, and ways of seeing the world. Therefore, by learning and using their mother tongue languages, students gained greater insight into the cultures connected to them.
Whether saying “你好” (Nǐ Hǎo) in Mandarin or “Kumusta” in Filipino, students discovered that each greeting represents more than words. Instead, it reflects history, connection, and a sense of belonging that links people across generations and communities.
Consequently, these experiences helped learners recognise that language plays an important role in preserving culture and identity.
Supporting Multicultural Education at HFSE
As an international school in Singapore, HFSE values multicultural education and believes cultural awareness is an essential part of preparing students for a globalised world.
Therefore, Mother Tongue Week provided an opportunity for students to celebrate diversity while gaining a deeper appreciation of their own heritage and the heritage of others.
Through these meaningful learning experiences, students developed respect for different cultures. Furthermore, they strengthened their understanding of how language contributes to global citizenship.
By embracing cultural diversity, HFSE helps students grow into open-minded and internationally aware individuals.
Keeping Cultures Alive Through Language
One of the most important messages shared during Mother Tongue Week was that language helps keep culture alive.
Every conversation, greeting, and story contributes to preserving traditions and passing them on to future generations. Therefore, by learning, practising, and appreciating their mother tongue languages, students become active participants in protecting and celebrating cultural heritage.
These lessons extend well beyond the classroom. In addition, they encourage students to take pride in their identities while appreciating the diverse backgrounds of others.
A Meaningful Celebration of Learning
Mother Tongue Week served as a wonderful reminder that education is about more than academic knowledge. It is also about understanding who we are, where we come from, and how we connect with others.
Through engaging activities and meaningful discussions, our Mandarin and Filipino learners deepened their appreciation for language, culture, and identity. Moreover, they discovered that every phrase, every greeting, and every conversation has the power to connect people across generations and communities.
At HFSE International School, we remain committed to nurturing globally minded learners who respect diversity, celebrate heritage, and recognise the value of every language and culture represented within our community.
Because every 你好 (Nǐ Hǎo) and every Kumusta carries a story worth sharing. 🌏✨
