In times of uncertainty and change, strong leadership becomes more important than ever. The year 2020 brought challenges that tested the resilience, adaptability, and courage of individuals and communities around the world. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 situation, it was clear that nurturing leadership skills in young people was not something to be delayed. It was a necessity. Preparing students to face a rapidly changing world with confidence, responsibility, and heart became an even greater priority.
On 24 July 2020, Primary 4, 5, and 6 students gathered at Block D of the Mountbatten Centre for a special one-day Leadership Workshop. Themed Leaders of Tomorrow, the programme was carefully crafted to develop the interpersonal skills students would need to navigate the many challenges they are likely to encounter throughout their lives. It was a day of discovery, empowerment, and growth, all while adhering to the necessary safety precautions.
From the opening moments, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones. Through a series of thoughtfully designed activities and team challenges, they learned the critical importance of communication, delegation, taking responsibility, and motivating others. Each task pushed them to tap into their inner potential and explore what it truly means to lead.
The highlight of the workshop was a highly challenging team project that required creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration under pressure. As students planned and executed their ideas, they faced real-world obstacles that taught them resilience and the value of perseverance. Time and again, they demonstrated the strength to support one another, make quick decisions, and rise as leaders.
Throughout the day, teachers and facilitators keenly observed, identifying students who exhibited natural leadership qualities. These students were shortlisted for further leadership training, offering them the opportunity to eventually take on responsibilities within the Prefectorial Board and to inspire the entire HFSE community.
Though the workshop was condensed into a single day, the lessons learned were profound and lasting. Students did not simply earn certificates; they gained a deeper understanding of themselves, of leadership rooted in values, and of their capacity to influence the world around them for the better.
